DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES HAS PASSED

The Thomaston Opera House is reviewing submissions for its second Playwright Project to be presented in the Arts Center in October 2008. The final production will be presented from a series of "staged readings" of plays submitted for consideration selected by the Playwright Project reading committee. All submissions must be by CT authors (proof of residency required) that are unpublished/unproduced.
Over 15 new plays by CT authors were submitted for this year’s contest. We are pleased to announce finalists that has been selected for a "staged reading." Additional readings for finalists will be held in May.

How did William Shakespeare rise from humble beginnings to become the
great playwright? This play tells the true story with all the juicy
details as discovered by an academic with questionable credentials.
It's 1585 and Will Shakespeare is unemployed and dreaming of being a
poet. His wife Ann is more practical, recognizing that poetry equals
poverty. She thinks about seducing a man who's a better provider and
Will thinks about finding the right phrase. Is this true love? Can Will
succeed? All the answers will be provided in the end.

Rita is 39 years-old, married almost fifteen years, when she decides she is in love with the young doorman of her apartment building. She tells her husband she’s leaving him but he doesn’t believe it. She tells her brother, her brother's wife, her mother and the gypsy psychic but she hasn’t told the doorman of her plans. All of them rush to help save the marriage, only to make it more confusing. Will Rita talk to the doorman? Will her brother stop eating? Is the psychic right? How does Rita find true happiness? Is it all about turning 40 years old?

Two Vietnam vets find they still need to work out what happened on that day in 1971 in Vietnam to find some closure. They look back with humor, rage and sadness to analyze the different paths they took to Vietnam and how they are forever connected to one another.
A discussion with the author, director and actors will follow each staged reading. Admission is $5.00 for each reading. Season subscribers get in free. Seating is limited and cannot be guaranteed without a reservation.
